20 years 20 Buildings: COAG Headquarters
The project for the headquarters of the Official College of Architects of Galicia in Vigo began in 2005, the result of a competition in which the architects Jesús Irisarri and Guadalupe Piñera were the winners. The proposal was based on the idea of adapting volumetrically to the maximum solid capacity allowed by the regulations. To do so, the structure had to adapt to the irregular geometry of the envelope. Thus, it was designed with a concrete structure ( columns and slabs) for the underside and a light steel structure, as a shell, for the roof and façade structure, made of polycarbonate. The project evolved from an initial version with a diagrid-type envelope structure to a version with a more simplified geometry that can be seen in the attached images.
The project also included the urbanization of the adjacent square. The building was inaugurated in 2009 and was a finalist in the following awards: FAD 2001, V ENOR 2011, Mies van der Rohe 2011, XI Biennial of Spanish Architecture 2011 and Accesit in the COAG 2011 awards.
